NordVPN vs PureVPN 2026: Which Should You Buy?

★★★★★By Joseph Sourav GomesUpdated Jul 202611 min read

The verdict, up front

NordVPN is the better VPN; PureVPN is the better bargain. Nord wins on speed, audit history, and app quality — it is what I would put on my own devices. PureVPN undercuts it heavily on long-term plans and has cleaned up its act considerably since its 2018 logging controversy. If you want the best, buy Nord. If you want acceptable privacy at the lowest cost per month, PureVPN earns a look.

These two get compared constantly because they occupy opposite ends of the same shelf. Both claim no-logs. Both advertise thousands of servers. Only one of them has been tested in circumstances where the claim actually mattered.

I tested both from Kolkata over 30 days, on the same 300 Mbps connection, measuring nearby (India/Singapore) and long-haul (US/UK) servers at peak and off-peak hours.

Head to head: the numbers

Factor NordVPN PureVPN
Speed retained (nearby server) ~90% of base ~78% of base
Speed retained (long-haul) ~72% ~58%
Independent no-logs audits Multiple (Deloitte) Yes (KPMG, always-on)
Jurisdiction Panama UAE
Simultaneous devices 10 10
Long-term price ~$3.39/mo ~$2.11/mo
Money-back window 30 days 31 days
Track record Clean since 2018 breach disclosure 2018 logging incident

1. NordVPN — the one to buy

Nord held roughly 90% of base speed on nearby servers throughout testing, including evening peak. That consistency is the real differentiator — plenty of VPNs post a fast number once, then sag at 9pm when everyone is streaming.

On privacy, Nord has now passed several independent no-logs audits, and it operates from Panama, outside the 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing arrangements. It also disclosed a 2018 server breach publicly and restructured its infrastructure afterwards — which, uncomfortable as it was, is the behaviour you want to see.

Pros

  • Fastest consistent real-world speeds
  • Repeated independent no-logs audits
  • Panama jurisdiction
  • Threat Protection blocks trackers and malware
  • Excellent apps across all platforms

Cons

  • Month-to-month pricing is expensive
  • Renewal price jumps after the intro term
  • Occasional peak-hour server-load dips
Best for Anyone wanting speed plus proven privacy
Devices 10 simultaneous
Money-back 30 days

2. PureVPN — the budget case

PureVPN’s long-term plans land well under Nord’s, and for light use — geo-unblocking, public Wi-Fi protection, casual browsing — the speed gap will not bother most people. It now runs an always-on KPMG audit, which is a stronger transparency posture than most mid-tier providers.

The honest caveat: in 2017–18 PureVPN supplied logs to US authorities in a criminal case despite advertising a no-logs policy. The company has since re-architected and submitted to independent auditing. Whether that history disqualifies them is a judgement call only you can make — but you should make it knowingly.

Pros

  • Among the cheapest long-term plans
  • Always-on independent audit
  • 10 devices per subscription
  • 31-day refund window

Cons

  • 2018 logging incident on record
  • UAE jurisdiction
  • Noticeably slower on long-haul routes
  • Upsells during checkout
Best for Budget buyers who mainly need geo-unblocking
Devices 10 simultaneous
Money-back 31 days

Lowest cost per month

If budget is the deciding factor, PureVPN’s multi-year plan is hard to beat on price.

Final verdict

NordVPN 9.4/10 · PureVPN 7.6/10

NordVPN is the better product on every axis except price, and it is what I would recommend to anyone whose privacy actually matters. PureVPN is a reasonable budget alternative for low-stakes use — provided you accept its history with open eyes.

Frequently asked questions

Is using a VPN legal in India?

Yes. Using a VPN for privacy and security is legal in India. Using any tool for illegal activity remains illegal regardless.

Can I trust PureVPN after the 2018 case?

They have since restructured and submitted to always-on independent auditing. For casual use that is likely sufficient; for high-risk use, choose a provider with no such history.

Will a VPN slow my connection?

Always somewhat. Nord held roughly 90% of base speed nearby in our tests; PureVPN around 78%. On a 300 Mbps line, neither is noticeable for streaming.

Do free VPNs work?

Avoid them. Free providers commonly monetise by logging and selling browsing data — the exact thing you bought a VPN to prevent.
